Dr. Karen M. Gil, the Lee G. Pedersen Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Professor of Psychiatry, has been Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences since July 2009.
As Dean, she oversees the largest academic institution on campus, including more than 70 academic departments, curricula, programs and centers.
A UNC faculty member since 1995, she previously served as Senior Associate Dean for Social Sciences and International Programs, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Chair of the Department of Psychology.
She has authored numerous publications on health psychology, acute and chronic pain, stress and coping, and childhood medical illness. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society of Behavioral Medicine.
She received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from West Virginia University in 1985 and a B.A. in psychology with highest honors from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1978. She was a faculty member at Duke University from 1985 to 1995.
