Danielle Allen, who grew up poor in Monroe, N.C., got a standing ovation at her high school graduation for receiving more than $1 million in college scholarship offers. Many of her classmates had already dropped out. She gladly accepted the Morehead-Cain Scholarship providing full support for four years at UNC-Chapel Hill. greetings from the interim dean
It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through another fall semester in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences. The leaves are just starting to turn on Polk Place and our students are fully engaged in learning and discovery, inspired by outstanding teachers and scholars. On University Day,, October 12, all of us enjoyed the installation of Holden Thorp as the tenth Chancellor. Holden’s experiences in the Department of Chemistry and as Dean of the College have provided him with a deep understanding of the people and possibilities we have in the College of Arts and Sciences....

UNC COLLEGE AUTHORS ARE TOPS
Authors Michael Chitwood and Daniel Wallace, who teach in our creative writing program, have won the top book awards for poetry and fiction from the North Carolina Literary and Historical Association....
triple crown for future political scientists
UNC College alumnus Tom Uhlman has founded companies, managed a presidential commission, led a major effort at the U.S. Department of Education and been a university professor. His recent $1 million pledge to the College of Arts and Sciences will endow vital support for graduate students in political science ....
