As the largest academic unit within the University, the College of Arts and Sciences forms the heart and soul of the Chapel Hill campus. Our faculty -- over 700 strong -- have been recognized for their outstanding research, teaching and public service in the humanities and fine arts, social sciences and natural sciences.

The College awards over half of all degrees granted by the University. All of the University's first-year and second-year students are enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences and more than 70 percent of juniors and seniors receive their undergraduate degrees from the College. More than 2,000 graduate students study and teach in the College.

The College includes 42 academic departments and interdisciplinary curricula which offer the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), and Bachelor of Music (B.M.). Many of these academic programs also allow students to minor at the Bachelors level as well. Details can be obtained by looking at the Undergraduate Bulletin. Most departments and curricula also offer masters and doctoral degrees through the Graduate School.
