Three UNC poets, including two alumni and one senior, have been chosen for a major national anthology, the Best New Poets 2009 edition.

 The poets are:

  • Matt Poindexter ’10, took Advanced Poetry Writing with Jim Seay in spring ’09. The poem he wrote in that class, “Nostalgia,” was selected.
  • Caitlin Doyle ’06 was the first Thomas Wolfe Scholar in the creative writing program. Her poem, “Thirteen,” was selected.
  • Andrea Young ’94 now teaches in New Orleans. Her poem, “Cleopatra, Pregnant, Refuses to Let Marc Antony Leave the Bed Chamber,” was selected.

The Best New Poets series is a crucial venue for rising poets and a valuable resource for poetry lovers. The only publication of its kind, the annual anthology is made up exclusively of work by writers who have not yet published a full-length book. Fifty poems were selected for the 2009 edition. The poems in the anthology represent the best from those nominated by the country’s top literary magazines and writing programs, as well as around 2,000 poems submitted through an online competition.

Carolina’s creative writing program has a track record of success with Best New Poets. In the 2008 edition, a poem by Kerri French ’03, “After Her Stroke, Our Family Remembers the Hurricane,” was published. In the 2005 edition, a poem by Joanna Pearson ’02, “Personals,” was published.

Best New Poets is published by The University of Virginia Press, in cooperation with Meridian: The Semi Annual from the University of Virginia.
