South Building experienced an unexpected tremor when the University of Kansas announced that UNC vice chancellor and provost Bernadette Gray-Little would become its chancellor in July.
Gray-Little, who has been UNC provost since 2006 and a member of the College psychology faculty for more than three decades, previously served as executive associate provost, dean and senior associate dean of the College, and chair of the department of psychology.
“While we are losing a great colleague, I take pride in knowing that one of our own has been tapped to lead a sister AAU institution,” said UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp, a former College dean.
Fortunately, Bruce Carney, UNC’s interim dean of the College, has been tapped to become interim executive vice chancellor and provost in July, while Carolina searches for its next provost.
Carney, the Samuel Baron Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy, has been a member of the College faculty since 1980. He previously served as senior associate dean of the sciences and chair of the department of physics and astronomy.
“Bruce and I have worked together in previous administrative roles, and I’m confident that his skills and integrity will serve us well,” said Chancellor Thorp.
Karen Gil, senior associate dean of the College and
distinguished professor of psychology, takes over as dean July 1. Her
appointment was officially approved by the University Board of Trustees last
month, after a national search.
