Three administrative managers in the College of Arts and Sciences have been recognized for outstanding service: 

Ruth Hyde (chemistry) won the 2009 Award in Management, given by the College for “outstanding accomplishments in leadership and management.

She coordinates all of the administrative needs of the department, which has 45 faculty, about 50 staff, 75 postdoctoral associates, 250 graduate students and some 7,000 students registered for chemistry courses each year.

 “Ruth handles this heavy load with courtesy and professionalism,” said Mike Crimmins, chemistry department chair, in nominating Hyde. “She is extremely well respected by staff, faculty and students who all consider her an invaluable resource for everything imaginable… human resource issues, student services, budgets, event planning, hiring, etc….. She is a truly remarkable department administrator. I cannot imagine doing my job without her.”

Mary Campbell (marine sciences) was named Manager of the Year by the University Managers Association. She has been working at UNC for 32 years and has been in marine sciences since 1986.

“Mary’s initiative, organization and ability to work with the wide range of people at UNC, coupled with her in-depth knowledge of the university community, are major reasons that marine sciences has so successfully grown and thrived,” reads Campbell’s award nomination. “She knows UNC inside and out, and her knowledge, energy and enthusiasm are essential to keeping the department going…. Mary doesn’t come to work to do a job, she comes to make things happen, to help others succeed, and to make the university a better place for students, staff and faculty alike.”

Theresa Stone-Phillips (philosophy) received the Outstanding Encouragement of Learning and Development Award, also from the University Managers Association. The honor recognizes for supporting employee learning experiences.

Her nomination included the following praise:

“She has wrought a dramatic transformation, demonstrating every day that warmth and friendliness can not only coexist with tremendous efficiency but contribute to it.”

“She has always encouraged her staff to take advantage of the tuition waver, allowing us to rearrange our work schedules, which in turn allows us the flexibility to take classes. She has also urged us to take advantage of any professional development workshops available through HR. It’s an important reason why I love working at UNC and in this department.”
