UNC creative writing instructor Michael Chitwood’s book Spill (Tupelo Press) has been named a finalist for ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year (poetry).
Results will be announced in Los Angeles on May 29.
ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year awards represent some of the best work coming from today’s independent press community across a number of genres. Nearly 1,600 books were entered in 61 categories; these were narrowed to 658 finalists from 350 publishers. The winners will be determined by a panel of librarians and booksellers selected from the magazine’s readership.
ForeWord is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively to covering books from independent houses.
Spill is Chitwood’s eighth collection of poetry. It is a book of spiritual yearning, grounded in the here and now of airport terminals, the backyard, a rainy morning and a broken down church van.
The (Raleigh) News & Observer wrote of Spill: “These are poems that manage to examine the tiny miracles of nature while praising the most profound truths of the universe. Chitwood is imminently readable and accessible …”
