“Carolina Week,” a biweekly campus newscast directed by journalism and communication studies major Jennifer Carpenter, has won two national “student Emmy Awards.”
Carpenter, a junior from Raleigh, is also pursuing a minor in writing for the screen and stage. She has directed “Carolina Week” since her sophomore year at UNC.
The “student Emmys,” officially known as the 29th College Television Awards, were given by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on March 15. “Carolina Week” won a second and third place in the newscast category. The major competition recognizes excellence in college student video, digital and film productions. Each year hundreds of entries are accepted in 12 categories from colleges and universities nationwide.
“I am lucky to lead an incredible team of hard-working, outstanding student journalists, truly dedicated to telling Chapel Hill stories,” said Carpenter, who is also the recipient of the 2008 Hearst Award for TV hard news.
This semester, Carpenter has an internship in Washington, D.C., with Congressman Brad Miller. In the summer, she will have an internship with The Washington Post and then serve as a student journalist at the 2008 Olympic Games.
David Sontag, the Wesley Wallace Professor and director of the Writing for the Screen and Stage Program, said Carpenter was the top student in his master screenwriting class.
“Jennifer is a brilliant writer and a wonderful young woman,” Sontag said. “There is no doubt in my mind that she will succeed in whatever career she chooses to pursue.”
