UNC music professors Brooks de Wetter-Smith and Allen Anderson will present the world premiere of their multimedia work, “Iceblink,” featuring music and photos from Antarctica, April 26-27 at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh.

“Iceblink” is a 40-minute piece featuring a chamber orchestra, soprano and narrator complementing the projection of hundreds of images of Antarctica, captured by de Wetter-Smith during a December 2006 expedition aboard a National Geographic ship. Anderson, the composer, and de Wetter-Smith, the photographer and musician, worked in collaboration to meld music, words and images to highlight the spectacular continent.

There will be two opportunities to hear “Iceblink.” On April 26 at 3 p.m. (preceded by a discussion at 2:30 p.m.), the public is invited to an open rehearsal in the auditorium of the science museum, which is located at 11 W. Jones St. All seats are $5.

The world premiere of “Iceblink” will be April 27 at 3 p.m. (preceded by a discussion at 2 p.m.) in the science museum auditorium. In addition to “Iceblink,” the music of Ran, Stravinsky and Debussy will be on the program. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $8 for students and N.C. Museum of Art/N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences members.

Tickets for both events may be purchased in advance from the N.C. Museum of Art (not the science museum) box office at (919) 715-5923 or www.ncartmuseum.org, and at the door of the science museum prior to the performances.

“Iceblink” UNC musicians include Michael Votta, conductor; Terry Rhodes, soprano; Tonu Kalam, narrator; Hugh Partridge, viola; and Donald Oehler, clarinet. The chamber group also includes violin, cello, double bass, harp and percussion.

“Iceblink” was commissioned by the Raleigh Chamber Music Guild, with support from the N.C. Arts Council, the City of Raleigh Arts Commission, the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences and the N.C. Museum of Art.
