UNC biologist Alan Jones received a national award for his distinguished, long term contributions to plant biology.

Jones, the George and Alice Welsh Distinguished Professor in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, was named a recipient of the 2009 Fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists Award. The award recognizes major contributions to plant biology in diverse areas that include research, education, mentoring, outreach, professional and public service, and service to the society.

Jones also holds appointments in the department of pharmacology and the program in genetics and molecular biology.

The American Society of Plant Biologists, with headquarters in Rockville, Md., is a nonprofit science society of 5,000 members from the United States and about 60 other countries. The society publishes the two most frequently cited plant science journals, The Plant Cell and Plant Physiology.

Jones has been active with the society for more than three decades and was appointed in 2007 to a three-term on the society’s executive committee.

Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in botany from the University of Florida and a doctorate in plant biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
