The Squire Family Foundation of New York recently awarded $8,000 to the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to support its Philosophy Outreach Program. The grant will fund a stipend for the program coordinator.
Working with other schools and institutions, the program’s aim is to promote philosophy in the community through seminars, consultations and targeted outreach initiatives. Collaborations include programs for students at the Cary Academy, the Durham Academy, the Morehead Afterschool Program, and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
Foundation director Roberta Israeloff learned about the program after coming across the Web site for the Parr Center for Ethics at UNC. Israeloff said, “The design of UNC’s Philosophy Outreach Program struck us as a respectful model that takes into account the needs of each partner institution, rather than dictating or imposing programs.”
Established in 2006 by Gary Squire, a Washington, D.C., attorney and businessman, the Squire Family Foundation’s goal is to help elementary and secondary students critically and systematically examine their beliefs and act on them responsibly.
