Historian William Ferris' new book, Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues, is reviewed in the November issue of Harper's magazine. "The book captures the cadences of [Mississippi blues musicians'] spoken voices and the stories of their lives, and teh DVD and CD that accompany the book allow us to hear their music. In his introduction, Ferris tells us about his own Delta childhood and how his devotion to recording these testimonies was, at the height of the civil-rights movement in the Sixties, considered taboo for a white man."
