Eight graduating master of fine arts students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will present their art in the Ackland Art Museum’s “New Currents in Contemporary Art: MFA 2012” exhibition starting April 13.
Alexandru Bacanu, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won a 2012 Goldwater Scholarship while Surojit Biswas, also a junior at UNC, received an honorable mention.
Damien Stamer, a current MFA student in the art department in UNC’s College of Arts and Sciences, will open an exhibition “Southern Comfort” at Freight + Volume gallery in New York on April 12. UNC researchers have found that gene switches do more than just flip “on” or “off.” The specific proteins called transcription factors that control which genes are turned off or on actually exhibit much more complex binding behavior. For the first time, “we are able to show the molecular equivalent of a real-time traffic report,” says biologist Jason Lieb.
Patrick Link graduated from UNC in 2007 with a major in dramatic art and a minor in writing for the screen and stage. His new Off-Broadway play, “Headstrong,” is inspired by the ongoing struggles of professional athletes with head-related injuries. (The run of the play has been extended until May 27.)
