Antonio Morgan-Lopez, an associate professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been elected to membership in the Society of Multivariate Experimental Psychology (SMEP).

SMEP was founded in 1960 as a small, elective society in order to facilitate high-level research and intensive interaction among researchers. Membership is limited to 65 active members. Many distinguished scientists have been members of SMEP. The society oversees the publication of the journal Multivariate Behavioral Research.

Morgan-Lopez joined the UNC faculty in July 2009. He was previously a senior research quantitative psychologist at RTI International.

He received a Ph.D. in quantitative psychology from Arizona State University in December 2003. His overall program of research has focused on advances in measurement and analysis in behavioral drug and alcoholism treatment contexts. He also has extensive experience in the etiology and prevention of mental illness and substance use among adolescents and young adults.

In 2008, Morgan-Lopez won the Enoch Gordis Research Recognition Award, named for the former director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The award is given by NIAA and the Research Society on Alcoholism (RSA) in recognition of outstanding biomedical and psychosocial research.
