Our mission in the College of Arts & Sciences is to prepare our students to think, communicate, collaborate and create. Attracting and fostering a diverse faculty is essential for us to fulfill our mission. Not only does diversity promote innovation, as the nation’s first public university we seek to mirror the rich diversity of North Carolina, in all its forms.
As director of faculty diversity initiatives, I will focus on working with departments to implement best practices in faculty hiring. In May, the College hosted a workshop, titled Mitigating Bias and Advancing Diversity in Faculty Search and Selection and led by Anne Gillies of Oregon State University’s Search Advocate Program. We will build on this momentum to adapt the practices of the Search Advocate Program to fit our needs at Carolina. Departments are essential partners in this endeavor.
To attain a truly diverse faculty, we must also work to create a community that supports the success of all. From the beginning of Dean Guskiewicz’s tenure, he has prioritized inclusive excellence. With a series of workshops on Understanding Differences, the College initiated important conversations on individual and structural forms of marginalization, power and privilege. But we still have many challenges. Until our faculty reflects our students and our students reflect North Carolina, we will work to create a university environment that is welcoming to the broadest community possible.
