Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences, the place many call the heart and soul of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The College is where all incoming Carolina students spend their first year and sophomore years. Although some students will go on to enter one of the undergraduate professional schools, more than three-quarters of all Carolina students will graduate from the College, selecting one or more majors from the dozens offered by our 43 academic departments and curricula.Dean Jim White types on his laptop in his office at UNC.

Whether you are experiencing your first semester on campus or are a returning student, I encourage you to take advantage of the breadth of our offerings both inside and outside the classroom. The College’s footprint extends far beyond campus to facilities on the North Carolina coast and to Winston House in London. We offer everything from ROTC to opera, from earth and marine sciences to entrepreneurship, archaeology and writing for the screen and stage. We are home to Southern Futures, the Program for Public Discourse and PlayMakers Repertory Company. And so much more.

It is a privilege for me to be part of one of the world’s preeminent public research institutions and to lead the College of Arts and Sciences — one of the best places in the nation to receive a broad-based liberal arts education. I strongly believe such an education prepares you for whatever the future may hold.

I encourage you to learn more about the College and our innovative IDEAs in Action curriculum by exploring this website, and to keep current with the latest news and updates from the College of Arts and Sciences by following @unccollege on Instagram, Twitter, Threads, Facebook and YouTube.

Sincerely,
