Hard science and creative writing combine in a Carolina course that explores one of the state’s most magnificent treasures.
“There is a very big gap in the hard sciences between learning those sciences and communicating them well with people,” said Sydney Thomas, a junior biology major.
A College of Arts & Sciences course called the Changing Coasts of Carolina aims to close that gap. Distinguished professors Bland Simpson and Brent McKee combine their expertise in creative writing and marine sciences, respectively, to inspire a generation of students to clearly communicate about environmental issues.
In addition to reading scientific articles and creative fiction, this course also includes excursions to explore the coast of North Carolina firsthand.
“Going and seeing what you want to write about,” said Blythe Gulley, a senior English and comparative literature major, “nothing can replace that experience.”
