Dear students,

Congratulations on completing another semester at Carolina. I hope you did well in your classes and exams, but just as importantly, I hope you challenged yourself, explored new ideas and approaches, took advantage of the awesome breadth of experiences that this great public research university has to offer and shared some fun time with your friends. These are the things you will remember a decade from now, and they are just as important as grades.

On Sunday, I will be attending my first Commencement as dean. I look forward to hearing Professor Daniel Wallace speak and seeing that sea of Carolina blue in the Dean Smith Center. Wallace is the J. Ross MacDonald Distinguished Professor of English, a writer of extraordinary talent, a revered creative writing teacher and a remarkable human being. Congratulations to the graduating seniors, master’s and doctoral students who have reached this major milestone and will be joining me in the Dean Dome.

To our continuing students, whether you are staying on campus or traveling far, I wish you a relaxing Winter Break and some quality time with family, friends, pets and nature. You’ve earned it! I look forward to your safe return in January, recharged and eager to take on a new semester and continue your journey of learning and discovery.

Go Heels,

Dean Jim White
