Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jacob Bacharach as the College of Arts and Sciences’ next senior associate dean for operations and strategy. His first day in the Dean’s Office will be Aug. 12.
Bacharach is currently assistant dean and chief business officer for Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. He brings to Carolina more than 15 years of experience in a variety of leadership capacities across the higher education, nonprofit, performing arts and economic development sectors. He has experience in managing financial and business operations, sponsored research and gift administration.
At Carnegie-Mellon, Bacharach has been responsible for managing Heinz College’s $70 million operating budget and manages other administrative and financial activities, including overseeing scholarships and fellowships for the school’s more than 1,200 graduate students and organizational development for 120-plus staff. He also built the college’s Office of Data Analytics and Institutional Analysis.
He led the charge to create the Heinz College Reinvestment Fund, which tapped unused unrestricted endowments and general operating surpluses to bring nearly $40 million into the university’s long-term investment pool.
Prior to his five years at Carnegie-Mellon, Bacharach held senior administrative positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. He is a fierce advocate for the value of a well-rounded liberal arts education, as evidenced by his love of theater and opera and authorship of two novels and a work of nonfiction. He earned a B.A. in English and creative writing at Oberlin College and an MBA at the University of Pittsburgh Katz School of Business.
I would like to thank Kate Henz for all she accomplished to benefit the College in her seven years in this role, and she has my gratitude for wearing two hats these past few months, assisting the Dean’s Office in the transition as she her assumed her new responsibilities in the Provost’s Office as vice provost for strategy and resource management.
I would also like to thank the members of the search committee for their outstanding work in identifying top candidates for this position: Committee chair Noreen McDonald, senior associate dean for social sciences and global programs; Ashante Diallo, associate dean for human resources; Kelly Giovanello, associate dean for research and innovation; Andy Lang, associate dean of IT and data analytics; Lachonya Thompson, associate provost for faculty affairs; and Laura Yurco, associate department chair, department of chemistry.
We look forward to giving Jacob Bacharach a warm Carolina welcome next month.
Sincerely,
Jim
