Dear colleagues,
The Provost’s AI Committee has formulated new recommendations for faculty. Please review the attached document, Developing AI Guidance for Faculty, and then make any appropriate updates to your syllabi before the Spring Semester.
All College syllabi are already required to include an AI policy, but the specifics of what to include remain up to you based on what is most appropriate for your courses. The attached document covers a spectrum of options, with suggested considerations and language for each.
I hope you will find that the new guidance is:
- Clear and structured. The guidance provides a step-by-step framework for integrating AI guidance into courses.
- Flexible and customizable. The guidance is adaptable to varied assignments and teaching goals, with specific examples and language.
- Ethical and responsible. The guidance promotes critical engagement with AI, emphasizing evaluation, transparency, and proper citation.
- Practical and comprehensive. The guidance covers diverse AI use cases while aligning with learning objectives and academic integrity.
Thank you for your attention to this important update. Additional guidelines for syllabi can be found on the website for the Office of Undergraduate Curricula.
Sincerely,
Jim
