Three UNC Chapel Hill students win Boren Awards

Three UNC students are being recognized by the National Security Education Program with Boren Awards, which support fields of study identified as critical to the national security of the United States, particularly language study.

Harvey Awards go to faculty work: housing app, game for hospitalized kids

Two faculty-led teams working on products to help people outside the University will receive a C. Felix Harvey Award to Advance Institutional Priorities at Carolina, which supply $75,000 in funding toward each project. One of these projects is a web app that will assist people in Orange and Durham counties, and is being created through Carolina’s Center for Urban and Regional Studies by William Rohe, director, and Michael Webb, senior research associate.

Meredith Emery is the University’s seventh Beinecke Scholar

Meredith Emery, a studio art major and geography minor, was recently selected for the prestigious Beinecke Scholarship. The Beinecke Scholarship, a program of The Sperry Fund, recognized Emery’s impressive achievements with a $34,000 award to attend graduate school in the arts, humanities or social sciences.

Henry Fuchs is always looking 20 years ahead, and two decades from now the computer scientist thinks augmented-reality eyeglasses will be the norm. Fuchs and his team of students and colleagues are developing an augmented-reality program to aid in laparoscopic surgery training and, maybe one day, revolutionize minimally invasive surgery.
