A window into North Carolina, through the best creative nonfiction

Michael Chitwood, UNC lecturer of creative writing, is co-editor of a new volume of essays, “Best Creative Nonfiction of the South, Volume II: North Carolina” (October 2017, Texas Review Press). We recently chatted with Chitwood about the essays, which celebrate the state’s past and present, and its range of cultures and geography, from the mountains to the sea.


North Carolina Humanities Council awards Bland Simpson with highest honor

The North Carolina Humanities Council’s Board of Trustees has selected Bland Simpson as the recipient of the 2017 John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities, the Council’s most prestigious honor.

QEP courses transform student experience

“Transformative” is the word professors Glenn Hinson and Stefan Jeglinski use repeatedly when speaking about the courses they’ve developed through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), a five-year initiative to enhance the undergraduate learning experience through “connecting, doing and making.”

Minor sets the stage for alumni success

It’s one thing to write something for a class and get a grade. It’s another to see your work performed or published. Started in 2003 by David Sontag and currently led by Dana Coen, the communication department’s Writing for the Screen and Stage program emphasizes the dramatic writing skills needed for careers in both theater and film.


PlayMakers’ Vivienne Benesch receives prestigious Zelda Fichandler Award

Vivienne Benesch, Producing Artistic Director of PlayMakers Repertory Company, is the recipient of the 2017 Zelda Fichandler Award, given by the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding creativity and artistry by directors and choreographers for their accomplishments to date, and their promise for the future.

Marching Tar Heels Reimagine The Halftime Show

Over the years, the Marching Tar Heels have been known for cheering on UNC athletic teams, spelling out Carolina in cursive, and leading 60,000 fans in “Hark the Sound.” This year, the Pride of the ACC is adding a new dimension to spice up the traditional halftime routine by bringing other student organizations onto the field at Kenan Stadium.
