The William Burwell Harrison Distinguished Professorship in Honors
An anonymous donor pledged $1 million to the College of Arts and Sciences in 2009 to establish a distinguished professorship in the UNC Honors Program honoring William Burwell Harrison Jr. ’66, retired chairman and chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Company.
Harrison, who studied economics at Carolina, played basketball for Dean Smith as a student. He enjoyed a nearly 40-year career in banking, joining Chemical Bank in 1967. In 2001, Harrison was named chairman and chief executive officer of JPMorgan Chase & Company. He piloted the company through its merger with Bank One Corporation.
A Rocky Mount native, Harrison has served on the Board of Visitors for the university and the Kenan-Flagler Business School. In 2004, the Board of Trustees honored him with the Davie Award. He received the University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and Kenan-Flagler’s Global Leadership Award in 2006.
