Navin Bapat, professor of peace and war in political science and serves as chair of the curriculum of peace, war and defense in the UNC-Chapel Hill College of Arts and Science, appeared live on WRAL.

Are the sanctions enough in your opinion?

Bapat: “This is a very significant package of sanctions that the Biden Administration has put together. What I will say though is that it is very likely that President Putin anticipated a significant response for violating Ukraine’s sovereignty so some of that is priced into his calculus. I think his strategy is more of a medium term one where he would withstand sanctions in the medium term and then finish … whatever his objections are in Ukraine and then waits and ideally breaks the coalition and their willingness to stay together and continue sanctions.”
