Jacob Bacharach is the Senior Associate Dean for Operations and Strategy.
Bacharach provides strategic direction and leadership in the management of resources within the College and serves as an adviser to the dean on all matters relating to finance, budget planning, resource reallocation, the design and implementation of technology plans, the processing of personnel materials, capital planning and the efficient use of space throughout the College.
Bacharach comes to Carolina from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy where he most recently served as assistant dean and chief business officer. He brings to the College more than 15 years of experience in a variety of leadership capacities across the higher education, nonprofit, performing arts and economic development sectors. He has experience in managing financial and business operations, sponsored research and gift administration.
At Carnegie Mellon, Bacharach was responsible for managing Heinz College’s $70 million operating budget and other administrative and financial activities, including overseeing scholarships and fellowships for the school’s more than 1,200 graduate students and organizational development for 120-plus staff. He also built the college’s Office of Data Analytics and Institutional Analysis.
He led the charge to create the Heinz College Reinvestment Fund, which tapped unused unrestricted endowments and general operating surpluses to bring nearly $40 million into the university’s long-term investment pool.
Prior to his five years at Carnegie Mellon, Bacharach held senior administrative positions at the University of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. He is a fierce advocate for the value of a well-rounded liberal arts education, as evidenced by his love of theater and opera and authorship of two novels and a work of nonfiction. He earned a B.A. in English and creative writing at Oberlin College and an MBA at the University of Pittsburgh Katz School of Business.
