Blending comedy and academia

Most professors expect students to use proper grammar in their classes, but in English 307, students are encouraged not to. The class is a grammar class. Students learn concepts such as parts of speech, double negatives and malapropisms, but as they learn them, they also are required to incorporate them into sketch comedy.

Languages symposium kicks off N.C. Day of Multilingualism

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University will host the third annual Learning Through Languages Research Symposium at the FedEx Global Education Center at UNC on Dec. 13. The symposium will be the marquee event for the North Carolina Consular Corps’ inaugural statewide Day of Multilingualism, a celebration focusing on the value of lifelong language learning.

UNC’s Air Force ROTC Detachment 590 was recently named best small detachment in the Southeast region for 2016-2017.

Nine undergraduates selected as UNC Phillips Ambassadors for study in Asia

Nine undergraduates from UNC have been selected as Phillips Ambassadors for spring 2018 study abroad programs in Asia. Two scholarship recipients will study in Japan, two in South Korea, one in Cambodia, one in China, one in Hong Kong, one in Singapore and one in Thailand.

FedEx Global Education Center celebrates 10th anniversary

The 2017-2018 academic year marks the 10th anniversary of the FedEx Global Education Center. On Nov. 30, the center hosted a reception in recognition of this milestone, reflecting on Carolina’s global achievements and honoring the faculty, staff and alumni who have been an instrumental part of UNC’s international activity.


Research at Carolina provides students with unique learning opportunities through hands-on research projects. Currently, more than 60 percent of UNC-Chapel Hill’s graduating seniors conduct independent research and contribute to discoveries made by the University’s research scientists. UNC-Chapel Hill Research Exceeds $1 Billion Annually for First Time

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has surpassed, for the first time, $1 billion in annual research expenditures, according to the nation’s annual Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey. This news continues UNC-Chapel Hill’s decade-long rise as one of the world’s top universities for sponsored research.

NASA Awards Grant to UNC: Land Cover and Change on Global Island Ecosystems

The NASA Land Cover/Land Use Change (LCLUC) Program awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill a three-year grant in the amount of $720,000 to examine the effects of social and ecological factors, particularly, human migration and tourism on the environment and on the sustainability of island ecosystems.
