Colleagues,

The College of Arts and Sciences has more graduate students than any other school on campus. The approximately 2,400 graduate students who call the College home represent 21% of the total graduate and professional student population at Carolina. They are vital to the University’s research and teaching mission and contribute to our reputational excellence.

Our graduate students confront challenges that are distinct from those faced by our undergraduates. For one, many are teaching in the classroom and handling instructional demands as they work toward their degrees. They may be mentoring undergraduates even as they themselves are being mentored by senior faculty. They may also be juggling additional jobs, research travel, child care and other responsibilities.

To better serve our graduate students, the Dean’s Office is creating a new leadership position in the College of Arts and Sciences: Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education. This position will begin July 1, 2024.

This Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education will work closely with the directors of graduate studies in our academic departments, as well as the leadership of the Graduate School and the deans of graduate studies at the other schools on campus, as we seek to recruit the most talented scholars to our graduate programs and ensure that they have the support systems they need while they are here.

The call for nominations and applications is below, with more details about the position and its responsibilities. The Dean’s Office will begin reviewing applications on February 2, 2024.

Sincerely,

Jim

James W.C. White
