New faculty to study health and wellness in communities of color, U.S. slavery

New faculty members in the College of Arts & Sciences will work across disciplines to study health and wellness in communities of color. In addition, two faculty will focus on issues of U.S. slavery and will work closely with the health and wellness faculty.

Senior Ashley Dos Santos knew that Carolina’s makerspaces were where she belonged even before she was officially a Tar Heel. Now an active member in the Be A Maker Network, she’s working to bring the world of making to more students.

Shuford Innovators-in-Residence to share diverse expertise and experiences with students

Seven new Shuford Innovators-in-Residence, all Carolina alumni, will support students in the Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship through academic lectures, professional development initiatives, mentoring opportunities and candid conversations across campus.

African Studies Center receives grant to develop elementary school content

The African Studies Center has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Oak Foundation for their project, “K-5 digital learning of contemporary Africa using technology,” which will produce resources for elementary school educators.

Area Studies Centers host Cultural Kitchen Series for N.C. educators

The UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University area studies centers connected with North Carolina educators in kitchens across the state in three virtual Cultural Kitchen sessions that explored dishes from Latin America, Southeast Asia and North Africa.

Nihar Vaidya is a Chancellor’s Science Scholar who uses computational neural networks to analyze brain patterns found in MRI data sets to predict when patients may encounter seizures caused by epilepsy.

New Asian American Center opens

The center, led by Heidi Kim of the department of English and comparative literature, gives students, faculty and staff of Asian descent a place to call their own.
