The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has named Jed Atkins, the E. Blake Byrne Associate Professor of Classical Studies at Duke University and director of Duke’s Civil Discourse Project, as the inaugural director and dean of the School of Civic Life and Leadership.

Terry Rhodes, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, has decided to retire at the end of the academic year after a remarkable 34-year career at Carolina. Her term will end June 2022.
She joined the faculty in 1987 and is the first faculty member from the fine arts to be named dean of the College since it took its modern-day name in 1935.
