Welcome, current and future Tar Heels, alumni, friends and families to the College of Arts & Sciences. It is an honor to lead the oldest and largest school at UNC-Chapel Hill. I am a Carolina alumna myself (Bachelor of Music, Class of 1978), a proud parent of a recent Carolina graduate and a member of the faculty since 1987.
The College of Arts & Sciences is home to more than 16,000 of Carolina’s nearly 19,000 undergraduates, as well as some 2,500 graduates. More than three-quarters of all Carolina students graduate with at least one major in the College.
You can learn about any of the 101 majors, minors and areas of concentration offered by our 44 academic departments and curricula by exploring our college.unc.edu website. The College is also home to numerous centers, institutes and programs that provide our students with opportunities to deepen their educational experience and support our renowned faculty in their research, teaching and service.
The College’s history dates back to 1795, when the first student arrived on campus, but we are focused firmly on the future.
We have recently reimagined our General Education curriculum – the coursework required of every Carolina student regardless of major. We are increasing our experiential learning opportunities, which include studying abroad, participating in an academic internship, conducting hands-on research with a faculty mentor or taking part in service-learning projects. We also are rethinking the classroom experience, with world-class innovative instruction and flexible teaching spaces that help our students become engaged citizens and knowledge creators.
Striving to erase the artificial boundaries between academic disciplines in the College, we are encouraging more interdisciplinary collaborations across the arts and humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. We understand the importance of multiple perspectives and diverse skills in taking on the challenges of today – and tomorrow.
